“Unorte – Darstellende Künste im öffentlichen Raum. Transformations of non-places and aesthetic interventions”

Special project “Unorte”

The project “Unorte” (meaning “non-places”), was initiated by BUTIÖR together with the Fonds Darstellende Künste in summer of 2012. Thanks to 600,000 Euro of governmental funding, the project has been able to support 18 productions in and for public spaces.

Symposium

In 2015, an international symposium took place in Berlin. It documented the diversity of artistic expression as well as the social and cultural-political relevance of theatre’s conquest of public space.

Publication

In 2017, the book “Darstellende Künste im öffentlichen Raum. Transformations of non-places and aesthetic interventions” edited by Günter Jeschonnek in cooperation with BUTIÖR and Fonds Darstellende Künste, was published in German by Theater der Zeit, in the series “Recherchen” (research).

The theme: what can the performing arts evoke in public space? Focused on 18 theatre and dance projects across Germany, the volume documents how so-called non-places were transformed into temporary spaces of life and action.

Further contributions were made both for the international symposium (which focused on the growing importance of performing arts as well as interdisciplinary aesthetic interventions in public space) and for this book.
