OUT AND ABOUT: Symposium

Concluding symposium in Detmold, 22-24.10.2021

Globalisation, digitalisation, demographic change and the climate crisis are just a few aspects that form social change now and before the pandemic.

How does theatre in public space situate itself under the aspects of social transformation?

If theatre in public space works through the interplay and synergies of artists, space and audience, what relevance and potential can the performing arts develop in the context of a creative and sustainable development and design of urban and rural public space?

The BUTIÖR invited participants to discuss these and other questions concerning the perspectives and strategies of theatre in public space at the final symposium of the project Out and About – perspectives on performing arts in public spaces from 22nd to the 24th of  October, 2021, at Hangar21 in Detmold.

At the start of the symposium, a keynote lecture drew attention to the developments of the post-pandemic city, followed by a panel discussion discussing the position of culture – especially performing arts in public space – in the future development of cities. What stories are told in public space against the backdrop of current questions concerning the relationship between humanity, nature and climate change?
Three projects presented their artistic and curatorial work on Saturday morning.
In four labs, participants were then invited to engage in a critical discourse to create visions for the future of the performing arts in public space with regard to global sustainability goals. These labs, each with different thematic focus, were guided by experts in their fields.
On Sunday, the organisers of the Digital KickOff and the four Satellite events of Out and About presented their results and reflected with the participants of the symposium on the future developments of the art form.

The four satellites consisted of the International Street Theatre Festival in Holzminden, STAMP – International Festival of Street Arts in Hamburg, LA STRADA – International Festival of Street Arts in Bremen, and the Welttheater der Straße in Schwerte.
