theatre for all
Theatre in public spaces reaches a wide spectrum of audience and draws immense crowds. The open nature and often free entry plays an important role and is unique in the German theatre landscape. Theatre in public spaces is, in the best sense, “Theatre for everyone”, regardless of age, social background, status and education. We like to call it, theatre without a cultural threshold.
“Even if free entry isn't the miracle-cure to reach the notoriously hard to reach audience, it is this principle, combined with the leisurely atmosphere, that has become one of the main factors. Free entry is seen as a defining aspect of democratization (…) when asked in a 2003 survey, 90% of the audiences of British street arts festivals, considered them a good use of public money.
